Your bedroom is arguably the most important room in your home. It’s where to go to relax and unwind, as well as where you can sleep and rest ready for the next day. That’s why it’s important to make your bedroom a relaxing and safe place and, if you believe in the power of feng shui, everything should be laid out to give your bedroom the ‘right’ energy to help you get the best sleep. Here’s how to Feng Shui your bedroom to create a calm and relaxing environment:
Rethink the Placement of Your Bed
According to the rules of Feng Shui, the position of your bed in a room is really important. It should always be against a solid wall to create the sense of being safe and secure, with there being enough room on either side and at the foot of the bed to move around. Having space at all sides of the bed will give you room to access everything in your bedroom freely, as well as making the room feel bigger and less cluttered.
Where possible, your bed should never lean against a wall that has a toilet behind it, be placed under a window or a beam or even a slanted ceiling.
Declutter Under Your Bed
The ‘under the bed space’ is great for putting just about everything that you have no other room for. From suitcases, books, shoes and just about everything in between - a lot can be found under some people’s beds. However, as they say, a cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind and to feng shui your bedroom, you need to remove all of that clutter. It’s believed that your body and mind can sense the clutter under where you’re sleeping and in turn, this can lead to you getting a restless sleep.
Try to Have Symmetry
Although not everything has to match, having symmetry in your room is visually pleasing and creates balance – especially if you’re sharing your room with a partner. With this in mind, try and have two matching side tables and two lamps. Similarly, two cushions/pillows on your bed if it’s any bigger than a single. This creates balance and equality between your partner (or your future partner) and helps to set a nice atmosphere in your bedroom.
No Books Allowed
Surprisingly, if you want to follow the rules of feng shui in your bedroom, then that means that books are out! It’s said that books contain active energy that stimulates our minds and therefore, the energy that they release can cause you to have a bad sleep. By removing any books that you’re currently keeping in your room and storing them elsewhere, you’re removing active energy and giving your bedroom a calmer and quieter feel. However, if you are currently reading a book before bed, placing this on your nightstand is perfectly fine – reading is important for a relaxing sleep!
Remove Electric Devices
We’re all guilty of staring at a screen just before we go to sleep. Whether that be the TV, a tablet or even our phones – all of these can contribute towards a night of unrestful sleep. Electrical devices release EMFs (electric and magnetic fields) and these can disturb our sleep and can even stop us from entering a deep sleep cycle. We recommend keeping your phone in another room and opting for a traditional alarm clock to wake you up – that way, you can have a great night of sleep and start the day fresh, without reaching for your phone the second you wake up!
Choose the Colour Scheme Wisely
We all love colour – it can make any room look inviting and bright, but the colours you choose have an impact on what you’re attracting into your bedroom and therefore, your sleep. Ultimately, the colours you choose for your bedroom are what you’re going to attract. Earthy tones attract support and relaxation, blue and green healing and red and pink love and passion. Do your research and find what you want to invite more of into your life and inject those colours into your bedroom!
Detoxify Your Bedroom
To make your room feel as relaxing and cleansed as possible, make sure that you detoxify your room as often as possible. Detoxifying your bedroom will remove negative energy, bad toxins and make your room feel calmer and more relaxing. To detoxify your room, have regular clear-outs and start cleaning with non-toxic cleaning products. You can also burn sage and natural oils to remove unwanted energy – a favourite amongst feng shui experts.
